California Coast With Fuji GFX50s

We needed some time out of town and Cannon Beach didn’t seem far enough away so we headed to Big Sur and Carmel, California.  I was really looking forward to getting some time with the Fuji GFX50s medium format camera and various lenses along the coast for some hopefully dramatic shots.  To quote Fstoppers:

The best camera isn’t the one with you, it’s your best camera, so make sure that’s the one with you.

So that’s why my A7R2 is in the closet at the moment and I can’t seem to be separated from my GFX50s…

Lens lineup for this trip was as  follows:
Fuji GF 23mm (18mm in 35mm terms)
Contax Zeiss 100-300mm
Contax Zeiss 50mm f1.4
Canon 16-35mm f4

Also brought a fistfull of ND and polarizer filters for the lenses and my Gitzo 0540 tripod.  And my Kipon AF adapter to make the non-native lenses play nice.

In retrospect, I used the 50mm and the 23mm the most.  I really like the rendering and colors of these lenses, and their compact size.  I could have done without the Canon 16-35/4 and might eventually replace it with the Fuji GF 32-64 lens.

Now to some photos from the trip:

Woodland Park Zoo Rose Garden – Soft Rose Bokeh

May/June is Rose time for me.  Warmer, longer evenings allow serene walks through some of my favorite local gardens.  The Rose Garden in the Woodland Park Zoo is one of my special places. I’m slowly learning the varieties of roses and hybrids. Aside from that, its a thin depth of field floral bokeh paradise.  I walk around smelling the blooms and looking for combinations of foreground flowers and interesting backgrounds.  My favorite lens for this used to be my Canon 85mm f/1.2;  Now its my Zeiss 85mm Otus 1.4.  In these gardens I find peace and creative outlet.  Woodland Park Zoo Rose Garden  More of my floral works:  Mike Reid Photography

Arrival of Spring: Crocus Blooms Bokeh

I watch the front yard each year for signs of spring.  For me, this is the arrival of the purple crocus blooms.  I spent some time amongst them with my Zeiss 85mm Otus, which has a pleasing bokeh.

Fall Colors Bokeh – Zeiss 85mm Otus Wide Open on Sony A7R2

I am crazy about back lit maple leaves.  Actually any fall colors leaves.  I heard that back in the middle ages, churches told bible stories to parishioners using stained glass.  They would walk into the church agape at the lights and colors.  Its how I feel amongst the leaves, looking up.

Zeiss Lens Sponsorship – A Dream of Mine

So for many years I dreamed about being contacted by Zeiss, the maker of the finest German lenses on the planet, about my photography.  That email finally arrived about a month ago.  They asked me to take some photos using a new line of prototype lenses.  They had found me on Flickr and appreciated many of my bokeh shots using their 100/2 lens.  I provided several images and they were happy with them.  This led to them offering me any lens on the Zeiss lineup in exchange for images for their blog and advertising.  I was in a state of total bliss.  I requested the Otus 85mm and Zeiss 135mm f2.  They should arrive next week.

Beauty in Small Corners – Columbine Montage

I have a few favorite gardens in which I like to wander and see what is to be seen.  Sometimes the beauty appears in small corners of a particular garden.  This was the case recently.  My Zeiss 50mm lens captured this scene in my favorite thin depth of field style.  A few Columbines with more behind.  DSC04291http://www.mikereidphotography.com

Peace in the Garden, or Not (Sound Carries)

Peace in the Garden, or Not (Sound Carries)

When I saw these tulips, I knew I wanted to get closer so I went back to my car to get my 12mm tube. I sat there and took these photos crouched amongst the flowers, listening to this woman talk on her cellphone across the garden blah blah. Then I went to the other side of the garden near her and suddenly I was “too close” and she moved away. Don’t worry I’ve already been listening to you go on for a half hour here 🙂
